Bottega Veneta Presented Spring 2021 Collection as Hush-Hush Spectacle

Bottega Veneta‘s current hot streak within the luxury fashion industry is equal part due to creative director Daniel Lee‘s inimitable minimalist designs and the brand’s exclusivity, granted by a carefully curated façade (and imposing prices). That sense of mystery informed an insiders-only Spring 2021 fashion show held in October at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, attended by the likes of Stormzy and Kanye and North West, the events of which have only just now been made public.

Dubbed “Salon 01 London,” the presentation is both a runway show and “a collection of objects,” as the brand explains in a statement, offering a look behind the curtain at Lee’s creative process. These objects include a record and trio of books, which collect photographs, short stories and other texts that document the ethos of contemporary Bottega Veneta. Produced alongside friends of the brand, like Tyrone Lebon, Neneh Cherry and German artist Rosemarie Trockel, the audio/visual experience of “Salon 01 London” fleshes out the seasonal apparel selection.

Lee’s acclaimed work for Bottega Veneta is expanded upon here, offering up one of his largest collections to date. Alongside soon-to-be fan favorite clutches bags and clunky footwear, the creative director and his team highlighted longline floral dresses, billowing wool overcoats and loose-gauge knitwear that recalled handknit hand-me-downs. Textural cardigans sat primly above generous, pooling trousers and even the occasional tailored trouser, tying the organic textiles at the heart of the collection together with contrasting metal hardware and jewelry; a hard edge against the soft layers.

Other luxury houses have been active in exploring the limits of pandemic-aligned runways, as demonstrated by Saint Laurent’s sandy SS21 getaway.
